There are many different types of insurance out there, such as pet insurance or homeowner’s insurance, but what about insurance for your jewelry? Typical homeowner’s insurance doesn’t fully cover any type of jewelry on it. That usually has to be purchased separately. However, if you don’t know this, then you are out of luck if something happens to your jewelry.
You can add on insurance for your jewelry, but you need to ask questions first. Ask your agent if there is a deductible associated with the policy and if so, then how much is it? Also, find out if you have to get the jewelry appraised by a certified jeweler before they will insure it. You may have to go to a specific appraiser that works exclusively with your insurance company. Ask if there’s one in your neighborhood and how much the appraisal will cost you.
You also want to find out if your policy is covered while you are on vacation. Is your ring covered if you lose it on the beach in Cancun? Will your watch be covered if you left it in an airport bathroom and it was stolen?
Find out whether you must get a replacement item or if you will get a cash settlement. Many companies require you to purchase the same or similar item in order for it to be replaced. What about jewelry that has been damaged? Check with your agent to see whether or not they cover the cost to fix damaged jewelry.
Take your time in understanding every part of the policy. Make sure to ask any questions that you are unsure about. If you have an agent that is good, they will work with you to answer any questions and also for you to choose the best policy that is right for you to insure any jewelry or valuables that you have.
