So This is Christmas:

John Lennon’s Happy Christmas (War Is Over)

So this is Christmas
And what have you done
Another year over
And a new one just begun

Lennon’s wish is for a world without war and fear, “for rich and poor, for black and for white, for yellow and red ones.”

This simple and poignant song was written over 35 years ago and yet wars continue to rage around the world. War can be over if you want it, but as adults we don’t seem to want it enough.

This Christmas, when you gather with family and friends, I suggest you have a discussion on what we can do to make our world a better and safer place for our children. It begins with each of us individually and working within our own community to help those less fortunate and in need of a helping hand. It’s called volunteering.

Bill Clinton recently spoke in Vancouver and said, “volunteering should be part of the curriculum in every middle school in Canada.”

Volunteerism is the willingness of people to work on behalf of others without the expectation of pay or other tangible gain. Society has lost touch with what it means to volunteer and that’s why it is so important to teach it to our children. Help our fellow man is the message that Christ brought to us over 2000 years ago. How can we go to war if we are busy helping each other.

A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let’s hope it’s a good one
Without any fear
