Approaching the Holidays Approaching the holiday season fills us with both apprehension and joy. The season of giving and receiving is a frantic time of preparation and planning. The Christmas season gives us a perfect opportunity to help those people less fortunate than ourselves. You might consider extending your generosity to include children and families who can use a helping hand. Easing the burden of just one person can have a lasting effect that helps make our communities a better place to live. Here are two suggestions on how you can make a difference; Starlight Starbright Children’s Foundation and SOS Children’s Village BC. Starlight Starbright Children’s Foundation is the brainchild of Steven Spielberg. It was developed to improve the life of hospitalized children. Starlight Starbright provides technology tools to either assist children with education or to entertain them through the long hours of pain and boredom. Over the years the foundation has evolved to creating events and facilitating activities for children and their families outside of the hospital environment allowing quality time without financial concerns. Connecting with other families in similar circumstances also eliminates isolation and provides emotional support. “SPARKLE” this year at Starlight Starbright’s 3rd annual signature fundraising evening presented by MarketPlace IGA and hosted by CBC’s Fred Lee! On November 24th join us at Vancouver’s hottest boutique-style auto showroom, Clutch, where you’ll enjoy the sensational sounds of local jazz favourite Lesismore. Check out the latest spring fashions at a fabulous fashion show hosted by Vladimir Markovich of BC Fashion Week and bid on auction items including a trip to New York! After the show, dance the night away to one of Vancouver’s hottest DJ’s…all while helping raise money for programs and events that help brighten the lives of seriously ill children and their families in BC. Tickets are $80 available at www.starlightcanada.org SOS Children’s Village BC provides a community-based family care service to improve and sustain the quality of life for foster children and foster families. Foster children are frequently at risk for emotional disturbances, delayed social development and poor educational performance. Foster parents who raise these children require ongoing special resources and support. Peace on Earth, December 7th at the Bell Centre, is the SOS Children’s Village annual evening of Song, Dance and Inspiration.
